About

A guide maker that keeps your screenshots to itself

Step-by-step guides are useful and tedious to make. Tools like Scribe and Tango removed the tedium and added a subscription and a cloud copy of every screenshot. Showsteps keeps the first part and drops the rest.

What it is

A Chrome extension. You record a task, it writes the steps, you tidy them, and you export the format you need. It works offline after install and has no account. The same recording can also export as a script an AI agent or a test runner can replay, because guides for people and instructions for agents are increasingly the same document.

What it is not

It is not a screen recorder, a hosted knowledge base or a team workspace. It records Chrome tabs only. If you need desktop capture, share links or comment threads, look at the paid tools. The comparison says where each is ahead.

How it is paid for

It is MIT licensed and free. There is no premium tier and nothing is locked. It runs on people choosing to chip in: support Showsteps here. Starring the repo or filing a bug also helps.

Privacy

No analytics, no accounts, no server. The privacy page lists every permission and why it is needed.
